I like coppermine, it's a very good application. I think Gallery2 is much better though, it's much more robust and has a ton more features.
You'll need to evaluate your needs and figure out which one suits you best.
It amazes me how many people don't know what is free. Yes, mySQL is free and as far as I know most schools already have it installed on the server along with PHP, if they offer computer courses. Take a look at the Photo Gallery demo at: http://www.dmcreativeservices.com
It's easy to install and is affordable for professional software.
I have used BOTH and Gallery is definately better than Coppermine.

I got coppermine working on the server. But the thing is. We want a Gallery that is very user friendly, [opensource or not] that we can basically upload a zipfile, and the program will automatically extract the files and create a gallery.
We want to do this on our school server. So parents, students and teachers can upload galleries and their own will. [but we would like to make it an approval based gallery]
