NOt sure where to post this, and I wasn't sure how to title it either.

Is there a website or a set of freeware software tools that can help me in deciding the best pallete of colors to use when creating a website or modifying my site?

Hi there,

Try this out **ColorMatch**

To use it just use the RGB sliders to generate the main or preferred colour and it will give you the code of that colour plus 5 other complimentary colours that can be used with it. Has its limitations, but its free and pretty neat.

Regards
Ian

Or try http://www.tigercolor.com/Default.htm or http://www.color-wheel-pro.com/ both of these cost money but only a small amount & both give you a range of web safe or non web safe colours in wheel or palette form. Tigercolours Color Impact in particular allows you to export graphics displaying your chosen palette or ranges of colours as well as export the palette itself for use in photoshop etc. I think colour tools are a necessary tool for any web developer so go ahead try a few freebies out searching for color wheels on google but also consider that small investment for a good program. Good luck

sorry hcolor I dont agree. I use both photoshop & because I use dreamweaver I also macromedia fireworks. You are quite right both have great colour palettes to use but what they dont have is the ability to look at a colour wheel. Any artist will tell you that being able to use a colour wheel helps to pick colours you like. Software colour wheels can help you choose schemes of analgous, complimentary etc colour schemes. Eg if you like a certain blue they can help show you the range of colours that partciluar blue goes with, is complimented by etc. They are very visual systems that you can play about wuith & then use to pick a range of colours in the scheme you like eg if its blue then a whole range of various blues with their hex codes as well as RGB codes. These are available as print outs so that you can keep a visual paper record of colours you used on a project for easy use and referal. Some programs can even be used to pick up a colour you see and tell you what its colour code is. An example might be if you design a site for a customer based on a photograph they like you are able to scan over the photo and pick out colours to use.

Anyway point is with anything try things out & see what suits you. Some colour programs & wheels are freeware or have free trials so download a few & try them out & see if you like. If you like then you will use it if not dont waste the money even if its only a few dollars. Don't worry too much about all these experts who tell you their approach. Its about finding a way for you to work.

Your original query was help on colour palette programs & you now have an idea for a few to try. Good luck !
