I have been using transparent GIFS to maintain strict table widths in Dreamweaver. It works for the most part, but only after a lot of trial and error.

For instance, if I try to insert a 10 pixel spacer within a cell between two larger cells (for creating white space), the table will become unstable and widen. Dreamweaver will sometimes even add an extra column to the right of the main table. This causes the height of some of the cells to increase.

You can view the code of a test page here http://www.wintonculver.org/ESWA/eswa.htm

The page looks ok now but if you were to make the 20 pixel cell (after History) shorter, it will cause the Calendar and Questions cells to get widen and create another column (viewable in Expanded view mode).

What am I doing wrong?
