If you're going to use a black background I would suggest white as a text color or something else that is very light. You want to have as much contrast as possible between your background color and your text color.

Black text on a white background is going to be easiest to read, but it's ok to reverse the situation. You just want as much contrast as possible to make it easy to read.

Using black for a background color makes text difficult to read for a lot of people no matter what the foreground color is. You might want to consider re-working your design. A light color, as suggested, is what you'll want to go with.
There is a set of color schemes that i've prepared and an article on picking a color scheme for your site on my website at http://www.trendybox.net/trendtorial...art=colors.htm
It gives a few tips and things to consider when you're picking a scheme as well well as 40+ color schemes with hexadecimal codes.

Hi

IMO you want to avoid Black. Its a pig of a colour to work with as white is your best text option and the search engines dont tend to like white text imo.

Also its very hard going on the eye. I always think red and gold are two fantastic colours that work well together - number one choice. After that its a case of trying out a different mix.

Once you have built a few sites you tend to experiment more with colours but your theme will have some impact on what you select. As we dont know what the sites about its hard to know.

Colours can say a lot about a site. For example:-

Secretarial Jobs is a site in Pink - not being sexist but works well for our female visitors whilst Jobs in Scotland is a site in Blue which offers a different feel again

So your target viewers effect colour selection as well as enjoyment factor as well as the relationship to the site content.

Hope this post helps.

Hopefully we can all help you get unlost cameron. Black text on a white background may not be the most exciting, but the readabilty can't be beat. I'm not bothered as much as others by the white text on a black background, but it's not as easy to read.

I think the main thing is making sure there's contrast between the two. Another thing to consider with using green is to watch your use of red text. Red/Green color blindness is fairly common and if you only set off certain text based on the color change some people are going to have a hard time.

White text on black background isn't very bad. I've seen lots of sites with such colour schemes and it's cool. Most of Apple's new products pages have such.
