Know what I want, not how

I know exactly how I want the page to be setup, but I've got some learning to do. If anyone can tell me what I'm trying to do (in technical terms) then hopefully I can take it from there.

What I would like to do is have a page with a top and bottom bar/table/whatever that are always there and that stay on the top and bottom even when the page resizes. Additionally, inside the main body there would be a menu on the left that would stay aligned to the top bar as the browser expands downwards.

I want it to be lightweight and tight so that there are no visible boarders, only blocks of color. It seems like CSS is easily the way to go, but in the reading I've done so far I haven't found anything that simply tells me how to do this so I'm not sure if I'm headed in the wrong direction.

The image below should help illustrate my goal. Thanks for any advice, code, or resources you can provide!

Go buy a book on CSS. Spend $15 it will benifit you greatly. Learn that, and after reading i bet you will be able to do it.

I took the long route, took me 2 years to learn CSS. Every time i approached a website with tutorials i was confused. In the end i got an Ebook and Learnt!

Get down to your local bookstore, and buy a book

Thanks, DesignGuy. I can tell you must be the helpful one around here.

I guess I did get carried away and I'm probably asking for a bit much. Baby steps. Primarily I'd like to know how to do the bars at the top and bottom.

If I knew what they're supposed to be called and had a some quality keywords to follow-up on, I could easily do all of the reading myself. I'm not looking to make a career out of this and I definitely don't want someone to just do it for me or just gut someone else's page. I'm just trying to help some friends out by getting a site up and running for their tattoo shop.

Just looking for a little guidance...

You can use something called IFrames, but to be fair i would not use IFrames.

If your in need of something to search for, below are some keywords that may help you gain your desired effect:

Tableless Layouts with CSS
CSS Design Tutorials
CSS For Newbies
Cascading Style Sheets

Here are some Useful Links that im sure would be of great help:

http://glish.com/css/
http://www.bluerobot.com/web/layouts/
http://www.webreference.com/authorin...yout/advanced/
http://www.htmldog.com/guides/cssbeginner/
http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en...eginners&meta=

Dont be afraid to try to create different layouts at first. Once you know the basics, you can then progress further and start to work on the layout your talking about above.

I could create what you need in about 5 mins, but im not going to, lol, because its great fun learning

One thing i will say to you is NEVER EVER USE TABLES FOR ANYTHING OTHER THEN TABLED DATA . Tables are no longer being used. To be honest i never use tables, i can always find a way not to use them.
