Hi

I wonder if anyone can help me.

I have been using Frontpage for setting up a web site but now I want to change it and start using Dreamweaver! I want to set up a page like this - no it's not my website - http://www.troutfishingsecrets.com/
I want to make a website with white background and a blue border like that. So I created a table added some words and then wanted to format the color but every time I - choose view-table mode-standard mode then went to Commands- Format table and I get a box come up that says:
The Format Table command cannot be applied to this table. Check that the TABLE tag contains only TR tags and that each TR tag contains only TD or TH tags.

Now I am really confused! And am not even sure if this can be done using a table. Please can anyone help me.

Thank you

Hi there,
you can do this by setting page properties in the modify tab and setting the background colour, then adding your table with centre alignment.
I did this one here as an example and it seems to look similar.
Have a look at the source code, it should explain what I did better than I can!
Hope that's what you were after.

hi

Thank you for your answer. It's exactly what I am looking for.
But, I still am stuck!
I opened a new page - basic page - then draw the table. Change the background color. But then the whole page turns blue not like what you have got. I can't figure what I am doing wrong.
Can you help

Thanks

Joe,

I'm at the office now, but when I get home, I'll check out what I did. I think you can define what percentage you want to use for a background color. So, if you want a "washed out" look, you'd use something like 80 or 90% white.

If nobody answers you between now and the time I get home, I'll try to write a detailed response when I get there.

Beepers,

By default, tables are transparent. Just click in the table cell and add the background color you want.

If you need more detail, let me know. I'll be getting home in an hour or so, and can better answer your question from there. (No Dreamweaver on my work system).

I'm working in Dreamweaver MX2004, so your results may be different.
  1. I created a brand new HTML page with no formating or anything.
  2. I right clicked on the page and selected Page Properties. On the Page Properties dialog, I changed the background color (Appearance group, Background color field) to a raspberry-ish color, and clicked OK.
  3. Now, back on my raspberry page, I went to the Insert menu and selected Table.
  4. I added a table with 4 rows, 2 columns, with a width of 80%.
  5. Before clicking off the table, in the Properties section of the window (for me, it's at the bottom), for the bg color, I selected a bright green.
  6. Before clicking off the table, in the Align drop-down, I selected Center.
That's all there was to it.

Joe,

The only way I was able to achieve what you're looking for is taking my tiled background (it's a wave pattern to look like water), and flooded it in an 85% white fill, then assigned my image as a table background image. This may or may not work for you. You can't set partial transparency (from what I can figure - someone, correct me if I'm wrong).

Hey Beepers

I, too, am a complete n00b at DW8. My company went out and bought me the book "Macromedia Dreamweaver 8: Hands On Training"by lynda.com (can be found on Amazon, or at Barnes and Noble usually) for about $40. It's a really good reference for us n00bs, and i feel like i at least have some sort of clue as to what I am doing now.

I would recommend it.
