Help! Advice Needed for Newbie!

Hi all!

I'm brand-new here and I really need some help...

I'm NOT a designer. I'm a writer and I turn all of my design work over to a Web designer. Right now, she's working on designing my main site, but I'm trying to design a quickie, one-page site myself.

I bought Studio 8 so that once she finished the design and we uploaded my completed site, I could edit the content myself without asking her to do every little thing... It simply takes too long to depend on someone else for EVERY little change...

So anyway... I'm in the process of trying to create a one-page site for myself. I have NO design experience. (Well, I actually followed a tutorial on how to design Web pages in Netscape years ago... But that doesn't help me now.)

I found a template I like, but before I spend the money on it, I downloaded a free template here: http://www.smartwebby.com/website_te..._templates.asp. I chose Template 4.

What is DRIVING ME CRAZY is that I CANNOT edit the text where the company name should go. It's supposed to be an editable region but for the life of me, I just cannot edit the text in Dreamweaver.

So I imported the image into Fireworks and have tried editing it using the instructions in the Help Menu. No such luck. I know what the text tool is. But when I select the entire banner, I still can't edit the text.

Can someone please help a complete design neophyte edit this banner??? I'm more than a little frustrated.

I use computers every day all day long, so this shouldn't be so hard. But I don't know how to "select the text." (In every other application, you just highlight it and then start typing the new text. Doesn't work here... Grrrr!)

Thanks for the help!

Sincerely,
Michelle

You can not edit the text because it is an image.

But , look in the folder that You downloaded and You'll find DWT template file.
Open that file and edit. Make Your own image with same dimensions and save it.

Hi Moondog,

Thanks for the advice. But that IS the file I've opened. And I STILL can't edit it. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I know that editing an image entails layers. And when I open it in Fireworks, it does seem to be divided into layers. (At least, I can see different layers when I open the Layers panel.) But when I click on the background bitmap, their text is STILL there and I can't get rid of it.

I can't seem to edit it directly in Dreamweaver either.

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. If possible, could you walk me through it step by step. I'm VERY frustrated.

Thanks,
Michelle

OK....let's try

When I said that You must edit image (in Your case image with name SITE_NAME.JPG with dimensions 474x86 pixels) that means that You must edit image in some of image editing programs like Photoshop or Fireworks.

Maybe it's problem for You to make image like that. Ok...I will try to explain how to make new image, and believe me, it's piece of cake:

1. new image (474*86 px)
2. use gradient from red to black (like the one similar to our image site_name)
3. on new layer write Your own text
4. or maybe on another layer put Your logo
5. save image like JPG or PNG
6. in HTML editor (Dreamweaver) on source for image , point to your new image and that's all.

Edit Your text in DW and save Your page.

In the same way You can make Your own header images with different colours.

You can do it!!

Thanks for your help Moon Dog!

I was able to create a banner in Fireworks. It's pretty basic, but I'm not looking for anything fancy right now.
