This may sound like a stupid question but png image files seem to be smaller and keep the same display, but is there any advantages to using them online?

Yes, because they are smaller and keep their quality. However, IE does not currently support transparent PNGs w/o a scripting hack.

I only use png formats for images online, unless it's animated.
