What size for graphics to use in header?

If I want to design a graphic for use in the header of a page that I want to run horizontally across the full width of the page, and then partially (vertically) down the page - on approximately one third of the horizonal part, what size graphic should I do to fit a screen? I will also have a page background that will show at the sides and top/bottom of this.

I sure hope this makes sense...if not, please let me know and I will try to explain it better!

Thanks!
Jules

I think the best is if you create your site for 800x600 screen resolutions.

So that the width of your header is 800. (if i understood your question right)

Actually, you want it slightly LESS than 800, 780 max, 760 even better. That will prevent any horizontal scrollbars from appearing.

Have you thought setting a width in %?
i mean try to set the width at 80% or 90% or what dimension you think it's best for your website. this has the advantage that it will look the same on different screens (with different resolution)

Percentage could make your contents looks weird if you want a fixed look for your site. Depends on what you want, I'd make a 100% width table for backgrounds, and a 760 pixel width table inside the 100% table for contents.

Hey, great idea! %'s should work even better! I won't be using tables (using CSS) so I am sure I can figure it out now.

Thanks a bunch!

why? he could set a min or max width.
also if you want you cand apply some rules like this:
body {
padding: x% x% x% x%;
}

and then the content with 100% width. this will prevent the content to strech the full page.
anyway there are lots and lots of methods to do this
good luck
