I'm looking at what forum software to use on my site at http://www.cgchatter.com/. I've set up a test of phpBB at http://www.elusionplc.com/phpbb/ and so far I've found this to be pretty good (and free), but adding add-ons and mods is very fiddly - it doesn't come with things such as file attachments.

I am very interested in vBulletin, it seems very popular and I've posted on many sites over the years that use the software (and noticed it's used here too). Would people say that vBulletin is the best forum to use? Is there a comparison somewhere of each forum have people had experience at using these forums?

I remember UBB (or whatever it's called now) used to be the main software, but last time I looked on their site I remember the price being very, very high.

Any help, pointers or advice on forums to use would be most appreciated.

Thanks for that, I might try a free trial of Invision.

Someone else has told me to try out Minerva (phpBB with all the mods all set up). If anyone is interested check http://www.flexion.org.

I am all for free phpbb. Because they are good people giving away such a powerfull script for free! They do make some money off of it but not nearly as much as they could. and anyway its FREE! Because the fact that it is free there are more mods for it. I dont know if you have been to phpbbhacks.com or not but they have thousands that rule. For example look at mine I completly changed the script to fit my needs so its very simple. You have to have some prior experience with working with code or you are in trouble. Check out my website its in my sig.

Absolutely, I'm utterly amazed such things are free!! This will go straight into my top links area. I'm not complaining at all, but I have very little coding experience and still getting my head around some of the scripts.

The Minerva software is increbile, news, photo albums, RSS, radio, calendar, stats and bags more.

I'll have a look at your site, thanks.
