i've been writing a web application for a customer and until today all was well.
now the customer has decided they don't like the look-n-feel of the wizard.
as a typical customer the critiscisms weren't constructive and the best they could do was 'i don't like it'

i think the problem is that they think the stage/progress indicators are too cartoony and not corporate enough.

some clarification (i'm not at my most literate when under pressure) : like with most commerce sites there will be some sort of stage/step indicator. for example when ordering from amazon there are several steps during checkout (order details, delivery details, confirmation etc) and each step is clearly identified.

well i have a similar thing but with a few more steps. what i need are some examples of other wizardy progressy navigationy things that i can show the customer so they can give me a clue as to what they want.

i've searched all over for guides/tutorials/examples of other progress identifiers but turned up millions of pages of useless and unrelated info.

so in conclusion to my essay of a question - does anybody know of a site with multiple examples or just ones you've seen a like the look of????

any feedback would be greatly appreciated as i have a deadline of next tuesday to rewrite this bugger.

cheers folks

purk.

purk: what if you took your customer to a few sites that have e-commerce ordering and walk them through the steps?

You'd need to find some with a graphic indicator, but they're out there.

If not, do what I did once on a site (no longer active): just create a rectangle, give it a slight gradient, bevel it by one pixel, and put circles from 1 to X on it with the step explained underneath.

borzoid: thanks for the link, not exactly what i was looking for - they are more progress indicators than step indicators but VERY useful for another project I'm working on. Have bookmarked the page, thanks again.

adam: you got what i meant - i love the graphic you've created and i like the fade on the incompleted steps. if you don't mind i will create something similar.

thanks folks that's just the input i was looking for.

Hi purk,

I agree with Adam that you should find some sites with different alternative order processes/steps and show it to your client.

One idea is to have icons to symbolize the different steps.

Oh, and try and have as few steps as possible and hide unnecesary options and only show them if relevant.

Go for it, purk. It's not like it's that uncommon a concept.
