I'm designing a website about different composers for somone. I have a main index page with the composers pictures aligned center in a row. I also have a CSS hover on the images so upon putting your mouse over the image the image moves up and changes to color.

Since the site is about composers can I do a hover to the effect that upon putting your mouse of the image of the composer it raises the image, changes it to color, and then starts to play music in the background?

I'd prefer to do it in CSS but if I need to do Javascript for it, thats fine. Any help would be awesome.

Not possible with CSS, you may be able to do it in javascript, but a better way would be to use Flash - this would definately enable you to play the file on mouseover.

It's not possible in CSS.

I believe the reason is because playing music is taboo and one of those usability issues. I know if you did that to me, I'd probably want to reach through my monitor and smack you as the webmaster. Never play music and interrupt my music (or TV or whatever background noise I selected.)

Well, I know I can do it in flash, don't not exactly ready to put forth the money to buy tools to create flash animations with. Unless there are free ones?

Secondly, playing music on the site is more of a No No when the music is constant. I understand most people browse the internet listening to music and it creats a longer load time plus interupts the users music.

I more of want to know how to do it for the sake of knowing and learning.

Well, I don't run windows so to run those programs I would have to purchase them and then go purchase WINE to run windows based applications in linux. Which ups the price a little.

There are a lot of things that are completely free for linux or unix based computers. Anyone know where I can get flash tools that are for linux preferably native to linux?
