I'm thinking about learning web developement. I do have a website of my own that I started working on in 2000. Through the process of creating the site I learned how to work myself through it and do things. At one point I purchased a book cant remember the name of it was a very cool book. I've also learned code from other people who were supposedly experianced but now learning they taught me how to code sloppy.

I can remember some of the repeated obstaclesI came across. Blockquoting, the use of spacer gifs, and the nbsp; These were suggested to me in order to align and format text and graphics on my page. I found myself using these way too often and looking at my pages some of them to this day you can see them. I'm sure there are other ways of formating and aligning text graphics etc without the over use or even the use of those techniques.

I didnt learn the clean code way..All the scripting on my site are scripts that I downloaded and edited to fit the needs of my site...

What are the areas I have to concertrate on in learning the proper way of webdevelopem...

HTML
CSS
PHP
Javascript
mySQL

Are those the areas that I have to concertrate on..

If so or if there are more areas can someone point me in the direction of where I can find tutorials on how to get my feet wet and learn them...

Thanks

Rich

Well getting familiar with HTML, CSS, PHP, Javascript, and mySQL is a good way to get your feet wet real fast. You'll have to have experience with all of them at one point or another in your career. Be careful not to get in too deep at first. You'll need to know about all of these topics to be a web developer, but you don't have to be an expert in any of them.

Most people pick one of two areas (design or code) and focus on becoming proficient in one of those. If you're going to focus on design then you'll want to make sure you learn XHTML, CSS Photoshop and Javascript. If you decide you want to focus more on the programming side of things you should be familiar with PHP, mySQL, Apache and javascript.

The key is to focus on which aspect you enjoy and try to do that. If you try to be a jack of all trades you'll likely wear yourself out trying to keep up with the industry.

You're right; I've been on computers for over 40 years; programmer in 4 different languages for many years; and accomplished Webmaster / Developer for over 14 years -- now that I'm retired, I look back and can truthfully say, I enjoyed the ride!

I've been at freelance web design for a couple of years now. If I were you I would focus more on learning XHTML and CSS.

I know very little Javascript. With a click of a button in Dreamweaver, I can pretty much take care of any scripting that I may need.

PHP and MySQL is the same way. I sub that out to someone else. I know enough to do some very minor things, but for the most part, I leave that stuff to the folks who like doing it. I personally hate it

So, you should get familiar with design web graphics. Read up on usability. I would suggest a book called 'Don't make me think!" by Steve Krug. Also you may want to look into accessibility. For me, I also took some classes on design concepts. I guess there is an endless list of must knows. But don't do to much at first. XHTML, CSS, graphics design and usability should be on the top of the list. Everything else will come later.
