A few questions as my site nears completion

I would be grateful for some advice as my site nears completion.
  1. What is the best way of checking your website works on all browsers? Do I have to check each individual page on all browsers? I have found already looking at a few pages that the spacing is different on IE compared to Firefox. I have done what I consider to be the correct layout on Firefox, is there a quick way of checking your website across browsers?
  2. If you have a flash image and flash is not installed on a browser is it possible to have a default image appear in the gap where the flash image should go?
  3. Is there a programme to check how quickly your site loads pages on all browsers?
  4. How easy is it to add new features to a site once it is up and running. As I don't think I will ever finish the site as I keep wanting to include things. Is adding features after a site is complete a good idea or in your experience does it cause problems for example is the site constantly down when you want to add things?
  5. I would like some ongoing support for my website just with general bugs etc. When I agreed to the site the agreement was a sign off after two weeks, but I am worried that problems will crop up after that so I would like some on going support. What would be a reasonable amount to be charged for some admin support and for what period of time should I ask for?
Thanks

Well, you can check how fast it loads on different connections.

Rule # 1 - a web site is NEVER finished, it is always evolving.. or at least you WANT it to.

Checking every page is the best QA you can do and do it in as many browsers as you can. Get friends and family to review your site using different browsers, and don't forget the Mac people. If you can't do that, you can always try BrowserCam - www.browsercam.com

You'd need to add a bit of flash detection, which you can get from Macromedia.

It's not the browser - it's the user's connection speed that matters.

Very. You just upload your new stuff to your host as you create it. If you want to use a database or programming language your host does not support, then you have a problem.

That would depend on a LOT of variables. Your level of knowledge, the size of your site, the frequency of your support needs, the complexity of your site - whether it has a database backend or not, etc.

1. I also use browsershots.org

3. I'd just google "speed test website". I think there are a ton of free tools that will run the page and give you a breakdown of what images take the longest to load etc..

4. It all depends on what kind of site your working with now (or have created). If your site is running on a CMS (content-management-system) its not hard at all. If you see yourself adding new content regularly you might check out opensourcecms.com, as theres tons of free content management tools that can help you upload new content without messing around with FTP, and new pages every time.

5. Admin support is tricky, I myself charge around $25-40/hour depending on the site.
