Dear all

Lets say I own this website (ficticious)

www.best-grapefruits-in-the-world.com

I've just posted it here.

Someone else might put it as a link on their peaches website.

How, can I, as the owner/marketeer of best-grapefruits-in-the-world.com track who is posting my website anywhere on the www.

Even better, how can I be updated automatically if someone posts/links/puts my web address anywhere on the net?

thanks in advance

Grapefruit man,

There is no easy way to answer your question.

You can go to Google and type in link:www.yoursite.com and get a listing of any website that links to your page. Now the downside is that the page with your link on it must be indexed by Google's search engine which may or may not be true.

Another way to get this information is to install a stats tracker program on your page that will track where the traffic is coming from... this is the best method. There are free stat packages out there such as Twatch and AWstats that are easy to install. Just do a search for them on Google.

Best of luck.

I know it's possible.

I remember posting on an electronics forum about an LED supplier in China.

I posted to the effect of, use this company & then posted their website.

The next day - they sent me an email of thanks.

I should have asked them shouldn't I.

bugger.

The only way you can get some idea is by searching in Google with your domain name. The link command won't work as Google only lists a fraction of the actual number of backlinks. Yahoo site explorer is better in that regards.

As for that thank you note, you received that probably because someone from that lcd company was monitoring that forum or someone told them that you referred him in that forum. That's all. There is no other magic involved here.

Your site stats should be able to tell you where your traffic is coming from. I know AWStats definitely does. It won't show you who links to you necessarily, but it will show you which sites your link is on actually generates traffic to your site, including the exact page where that link is.

There's really no way to know that. It's just not possible. That would be a lot like wanting to know every time somebody speaks your name. Might come in handy, but there's no way to make that work.

But think about it: somebody linking to your site on the internet only matters if other people click that link. So while awstats doesn't answer your question, it tells you what's important to know.

I know that through GoDaddy their stats will list the top 20 or 30 (I can't recall) links that drive traffic to you.

The standard Godaddy stats are pretty basic, but they will give you referring sites. AWSTATs is free and will give you 20x the detail...
