Here is a free one:

Oscommerce and Zen cart are 2 most popular open source carts.

if you're selling merchnadising that you still have to produce you might want to consider cafepress.com or spreadshirt.com
this would allow you to start investing 0 in the initial stocks
if you want a real cart I'd probably go with oscommerce
I have never used it myself but tried it and it's pretty straightforward

if you're willing to cough up some money, then x-cart is one of the best out there, and its also one of the easiest to set up and operate.

I have used oscommerce before. My opinion is, you'd better get ready to do some serious code editing. To get it to behave the way you want it too, you will have to install several third party scripts. You will also have to have an SSI socket on your server with certificate verification. This costs some extra bucks.

I found it to be more of a pain than it was worth.

Yea I will explain, I'm running low on time and have no time to be getting frustrated and working nonstop with coding and cart issues to get it perfect. So sorry if that was odd reply but I meant to say it like "Oh no way, I'll go with X-Cart."

Lets put it this way. First off oscommerce is open source. You WILL NOT get any support from the software makers.

All you can do is go to the forums which are so saturated with requests, it can take up to a week or more to get a reply. If you get one sooner, someone may direct you to this http://www.oscommerce.com/community/contributions these are all (some good, some not so good) attempts at third party scripting by average coders to make the software better. If you install one and it crashes your DB your screwed. (unless of course you back everything up and re-install your backup) which can be more time consuming than installing the contribution in the first place...

There are thousands of contributions there but NONE are supported by oscommerce.

Trust me when I say, if you have nothing better to do than edit hundreds of code files, this is for you. If not RUN !!!!
