I designed a site and put it into the .orgfree free wesite service. I updated my site and uploaded the new via FTP and Filezilla.

I typed in the URL in IE6 only to get the old site!!

I used Filezilla to delete everything in my account on the server and uploaded the new site again.

Guess what, the old site appeared in IE6 on typing the URL.

What am I doing wrong here?
Thanks in advance

We've all had that happen at one time or another. Just refresh should do it, or remove all cookies as HowLong said.

Thank you all for the quick replys. I wrote to the support people and they told me to flush the browser's history.
It must be the cookies since I just tried the site on another PC and all is well Phew

You misunderstand the concept of the browser's CACHE and HTTP. Your IE was not pulling the pages from your SERVER, it was retrieving them from the CACHE on your hard drive. In IE that means "temporary internet files" which you should clean out on a regular basis anyway because they chew up space.. among other things. In other browsers, clearing the CACHE in your browser's options will fix the problem.

Yeah, clearing the CACHE and COOKIES!

One more thing: when You've upload files to Your server via FTP, use refresh button (it depends on FTP application You use).

the problem can be from the host server to ....

How would a hosting provider cause this issue? Providing you uploaded the files using your FTP client software (not provided by the hosting provider!) then it would work ok?

The only reason for it not to would be caching (as per this instance), or otherwise a problem with the file upload - which would be reported by your FTP client and could be caused by FTP client and/or server.

If the files were actually uploaded ok, then the hosting provider can't be serving the old ones (assuming we're talking about a standard shared hosting account and not some clustered config etc.).

A soft refresh (F5) may not reload pages, it could still pull from the cache.

It would need to be a hard refresh, which is Ctrl+F5 in most browsers.
