Personally I use a few programs... Adobe illustrator I found to be the best... I has all the tools I need to create a logos...

I also use Fireworks and photoshop... Fireworks is easier and faster to create logo with.. but photoshop is more powerful... Illustrator is the best of both worlds.

what is good for 3d logos etc..

like real 3d text with texturing and lighting.. is there a solution that avoids using raytracing/3dmax?

There is no average size for a logo.
A logo should be developed in vector formats so that its independent of size restrictions.

Well, if your looking in the "free" range, INKSCAPE is a great tool for making graphics, and logos (its what I use to make logos).

i use adobe photoshop for it.and i think it is best out of best.
