Sorry if this is in the wrong forum. I thought it was the best choice.
What if any difference is there between a graphic designer and a web designer?
I think it's a very thin line. I'd like to hear your opinions.
Thank you!!

Actually Robert, in my experience there are differences between the two.
The term "graphic designer" is used loosely in the web design industry by some to mean many things - but a graphic designer should be qualified to create art. The graphic designers in our firm have Fine Arts degrees and are absolutely hopeless at coding (I'm not suggesting all artists are hopeless at coding - just ours).
A web designer is someone who likely can handle softare such as Photoshop or Fireworks, but would not necessarily be a true artist. They primarily take graphics, slice them up, do a few creative things with HTML, JavaScript and CSS - and finally pump out a finished product. In some cases they may take packaged software (such as OSCommerce) and 'skin' it/tweak it for a client. Most web designers are also reasonably adept at setting up the server for a site and uploading/downloading files etc. They may also assist clients with processing/analyzing log files.
I differentiate between web designer and web developer. In my view, a developer is someone who can do custom code to achieve higher levels of functionality for a client (AKA programmer).
These jobs can flex into many other areas of expertise but I think this would be close to the proper definitions. I certainly would invite some of the WMT gurus to add/subtract from this as they see fit...

A graphic designer tends to work with media a lot more i.e printed adverts, logo designer, letterhead etc.. - You don't necessarly need fine arts to be called a graphic designer, there is other degrees which you can hold the title graphic designer,
A web designer pretty much sticks to designing web apps, and sites. - Work which is made to be published on the net.

Hi vkw91 - your are 100% correct. I wasn't suggesting that a graphic designer must have a fine arts degree etc. to be a graphic designer. I was just stating that ours do. I have seen some very talented graphic designers who don't have even one minute of formal art training - some people just have the gift of creativity..

A web designer will do the coding for the site, a graphic designer usually just does graphics.

A graphic designer works with large stylish vector images, also works with printers, needs to know things about DPI, bleeds, etc...
A web designer works with pixels and digital documents only.

I call myself a web designer, even if I do work on printing designs. I don't consider myself to be a graphic designer since I don't work with the pen and paper at all. My work is mostly photo manipulation and layouting. As for degrees .. I don't have any special courses under my "belt", but I have done web design for 5 years now and I currently own my design firm. And have tens of layouts and works done. Excellent topic though ...

Would this be a good course to take to become/for a web designer?
Note that the title of the course is Graphic Design and Animation

I think graphic designer is responsible for only graphic part but a web designer is a person for converting graphic in html format
Thanks

I call myself both! - is there something someone hasnt told me? lol...I design both for print and web, and although I didnt study art - I also draw freehand, create stipplework, and got into the whole "internet" thing through learning Bryce3D... If I had to break it down given industry standards in UK, Id say a graphic designer is someone who designs in any medium, thats ultimate goal is printed materials, web designer creates work which ultimately is aimed at the internet...do I get a pat now?

It is really tough today to find a school that specializes in web design/development training. And even if you do, you will still have a lot to learn on your own in the real world.
One time, I changed my major over to graphic design because I thought it would help me become a web designer. However, I had to take lots of art history, lots of drawing (like with charcoal...blah), and hardly anything to do with web design. So needless to say, I changed my major again.
There are quite a few differences between graphic designers and web designers. Everyone here has pointed out some good differences.

I have a fine arts degree and prefer to be known as a web designer/developer. I currently do all of my graphics for web sites as well as program it to function.
