HI
im here to know that how much people votes SMF and how much goes with PHPbb.
i m using SMF and it is doing well for me.
Tell your choices and the reason behind it
Cheers
I've used both SMF (almost last version, don't know the number) and phpBB 2, and I largely prefer SMF, simply because it's more secure and is a lot more modern than phpBB. However, I might need to reconsider that once phpBB 3 is out.
Going to be a good competition
I am using phpBB but when i used SMF,i likd it more,it looks more polished and advanced,it has more features
The only difference which makes a deciding factor for me is the size of the package as i have limited download/upload limit on my internet connection

I've used both, I prefer SMF. phpBB wasn't as elegant, I had major problems with spam and other security breaches. Since installing SMF things are a lot easier. The add-ons are much easier to install and upgrading is a cinch.
SMF definitely looks more professional and modern than phpBB 2.0, but now that 3.0 is out and there's a steady flow of designers creating free templates for the forum software, I think that will all change.

I've been extremely happy with SMF but only used PHPbbb for a little while. It was nice, also but I just found SMF to be a little easier for admin purposes.
I'd be interested to know which one users prefer...I seem to have a lot of non-savvy computer users in my forum and can't get them to even TRY the Coppermine Photo Gallery I set up and some feel both of these forums are "too difficult to use". Can't figure that one out -- think people are just too lazy to take a little time to just look at the buttons as both of these seem pretty intuitive to me.
I'll check out that PunBB link...thanks. This is the first I've heard of that one.
