I quite agree with the opinions made above.
Still you may try to improve your skills of designing either by taking up a training course or by simply brushing up your basic skills.
As a part of informal training I tell many of the students to study carefully the good looking websites and try to analyze why it looks great - the design, the layout or the choice of colors .
Now while designing your own website always use a storyboard first. Consider different possibilities with layout and color and finally select the most appealing one. You may use image editing software also to design a template. Now use your coding skill to implement it as closely as possible.
Always consider public opinion on your designs. It will help you to improve a lot. It really takes some time to become a good designer. But still to be a great designer is simply an art and nobody has yet been able to decipher the chemistry of art.
