It depends what kind of editor you're looking for but after trying many, many text editors I have fallen for: Komodo Edit.

If you're looking for a WYSIWYG type editor then I don't have any recommendations for you.
But try KE anyway, you might like it.

For a text editor I would use jEdit or Notepad++. I always prefer these, as they give me more control over what I get on the screen.

For a WYSIWYG editor I would use NVU...it's pretty good and it has a UI that looks a lot like Dreamweaver.

It's amazing how many people use Notepad++ even though it's really the best text editor there is. I just thought it would be more obscure!

Well, personally I like jEdit...but I might be moving back to Notepad++ soon, I like the tabs instead of the drop-down menus.

I use Programmers Notepad. www.pnotepad.org. It's really use to use aswell.

But when it comes down to a WYSIWYG editor, I mainly use Dreamweaver, but that is not free.
