It's my new blog/website. I just set up the domain and added some content to get the flow going.

Please keep in mind that this incomplete and will look better and have more content soon enough.

Is there some reason you put xhtml strict as your DOCTYPE? Your code is not even xhtml transitional. 395 errors. You have a way to go.

the background 'swooshes' are too bold and detract from the text.

i thought this was pretty funny

The white text on a very light background makes it difficult to read.

The light colored text seems a little difficult to read. IMO
