I think it looks pretty good overall and it loaded quick for me. Personally, I wouldn't read that much text in the beginning but I'm not sure how others would react to that. Maybe make the icons really big to draw in more traffic and page views and you could even cut down the height of that bar and save more space, possibly for some horizontal ads right there on top of that bar.
Personally, I wouldn't join a forum until I actually needed to do some action like post something or w/e. On that, I would assume most people would only join when the feel the "need" to join so it could be a waste to have the pitch right there, but I could be wrong and you could be getting all your sign-ups through that link - good thing for statistics to tell you that.
Looks good though! What kind of traffic are you getting currently?
