I recently forced myself to redesign my personal website after basically having the same thing for five years. I would appreciate any comments, harsh or otherwise.

Hello,

Great looking website overall. I like how you added in more personal features to your website such as "webcam" - Nice touch. The only thing that I'm not thrilled about is the brownish background you have selected for your main content area. It just seem to fix the design. You did a great job keep up the work. I hope I was helpful.

I'm not happy with the colors myself yet. I'll be experimenting in the near future. In the mean time I think I have a scheme that's if nothing else, unoffensive.

I really liked the webcam as well very nice touch. I am not crazy about the color scheme, maybe try blue instead of red. I am very pleased with your photography and I like how you added all the information on the picture below it.

I don't really like the colors at the top of the page. It's hard on my eyes =|. Are you sure mustard yellow is the color you want your website to be?

The rest of the website looks good. You have a lot of info for a personal site. Usually people never complete them .

Pod.

The color scheme looks okay though I think it would be better if you lighten the color on your header. It's quite dark and hard to my eyes.

But overall, your sites good.

I ma say that the color scheme is not that great and the layout also looks simple to me, I think that you should do some adjustment on the design!

I would move around a few objects to make the template look less linear, and I would overhaul the color scheme, I am not a fan of those colors at all.

The colors are a work in progress. I'll be fooling with those tonight.

@johnlloyd and theguru - I'm curious how you might go about altering the template to make it "less simple" and "less linear."

Clear and uncluttered. If anything the background is too dark. The Gallery is well laid out and clear to follow with some great pictures too.

I changed the little content background gradient to have something brighter which makes this more readable. I will probably continue to play around with the color because it looks rather 'unimpressive' on some CRT monitors I've viewed the site with.

Okay well, I don't really see any totally in-depth stuff here, so I guess I'll do my thing. You don't seem like the offensive type. Please feel free to ask for clarifications or totally disagree.
It's...not a good design. However, it's a good design concept. I'll start with elements I really like:

The initiative - You've got a structure going on, you've got a favicon and different page layouts going on. I'm totally impressed. A lot of designers don't take enough time to plan interior pages that well.

The header gradient - I love it. The pattern and the colors are totally amazing and could make for the basis of a very nice theme.

The navigation - I'm always struggling with tabbed navigation. I love how you've handled it. Very sleek. I would say highlighting it with the beige gradient instead of the black/white ghost thing you've got going on. Keep up the consistency.

Now on to the negatives:

No drop shadow images - they just don't look good.

The scheme: the green background for content? I would lose it. Honestly it's just not an attractive background color, and with all the emphasis on spacing in your design, it's kind of dragging it down. I would also invert (make the beige black and the black beige) the navigation. I think it would go better with the pattern if you're looking for a darker color scheme. So I'm gonna run down two roads now:

Darker scheming suggestions - invert the navigation, then use the lightest blue in the gradient (which is pretty dark) for the background. Lighten up the text colors so they're visible.

Lighter scheming suggestions - keep the navigation as it currently is, and use a lighter beige (really light) as your background.

I would not suggest keeping the scheme exactly as it is. The text is just too hard to read.

The Layout: The homepage is fine, as is the portfolio. Once you reach the images and galleries, you've gone too far. The gallery page feels really messy to me. The about page does as well, it feels like there's just too much space.

The Logo: Dude, go for white with no border. It will go much better (in my opinion) with the gradient. Also, I would suggest getting a thinner font. You've got a lot of emphasis in that pattern to work with.

It almost feels like you're trying to do too much. I would say stop, evaluate the elements you really want to bring out, and design based on those. If you want resources, more opinions, or you just wanna yell at me (it's happened before) then let me know.

The blue and black of the header looks great but then the shift to tan and green colors is not so great. Logo style is nice to me but maybe a different font would increase effect.

A really nice site, but I wasn't thrilled by the colour scheme. I especially didn't like the white writing (for links) on the silver background.

Per the advice of…everyone, I altered the color scheme yet again and I think I have something that works with the beige background (sneaky’s suggestion). It should look less offensive on crappy monitors. I know this would have been so much easier to just do a dark blue background but every previous website of mine has a dark background so I’m very eager to go the other way this time.

@ Sneakyheathen – Thanks for taking the time to write a thorough post, I agreed with a lot of your advice. I took a quick crack at your logo suggestion and didn't care for it (http://mrbsdomain.com/images/header_mrbsdomain2.png ). If I find a thin font I like I’ll take another shot at the logo… I could certainly use the practice as photoshop and similar apps are pretty foreign to me. On the rest of the site I’ll try alternatives to drop shadows.

I took your advice on the about page and put the content in two columns. However, I am curious exactly how you would improve the gallery format. It’s a grid with pictures in it… I don’t understand how that is ‘messy.’

The elements after the pictures, they're all over the container, or at least they appear to be. I would align them with the images, or define the columns more. The about page looks nicer now, though.

That's much better. The beige background works well.
