for me, a website is always a medium for me or my business to look bigger than it really is. with that said, having a photo like the one you have in the header works against that philosophy. including a photo of the store front, in my opinion, also works against that philosophy. though sometimes the small store charm will attract customers, the majority will be pushed away, imo. i feel the majority would rather go to a large chain store like petland, pet depot, etc.
now onto the website.
does the owner have a sign above his store, or a customized logo of some sort? that would help with the overall professionalism of the website and the business. the simple black font you have now isn't really appealing. also, the dark blue background makes the black text hard to see.
i don't like the symmetry of the two yellow birds on the side, facing each other. i feel a better photo of birds could be used, on one side. maybe a couple of birds in one shot.
i've mentioned above about how i don't think that photo would be a good header. if you're looking for photos or images, try photo site, like istockphoto or similar. it definitely better to use more professional looking photos.
i feel your website's background does not work well with black text. it's hard to read. it doesn't contrast enough.
for the "nursery" section, the pop-up images of the thumbnails are not much bigger. in fact, the thumbnail is just cropped from the full image. i would suggest getting larger photos of the birds on the pop-up. if i was a customer, i would want to see beautiful photos of these birds and the color of their feathers etc. the pop-up photos are just too small.
you have two "bird stands" entires in the "products" page.
for all the thumbnail image links on your site, i would suggest you get rid of the border.
the copyright are missing from two pages.
to avoid spam, i would suggest you use a contact form instead of mailto.
lastly, i'm not sure if you really need the blue footer bar. all it has are the links of your site once again. i would make the links more minimal instead of putting them in this rather large blue bar.
