Yes, it removes attention from your content. Also make it a bit more happy to look at.

I really dislike the gecko pop out thing. Your website feels very cramped, makes me claustrophobic =/.

Not bad man, like the head image background.

Main issue imo is the fonts; the logo font is a bit "rough", but esp the content headers - maybe try Georgia/Times New Roman as you've used elsewhere.

Otherwise I would just say some tweaking on padding and such to neaten it all up a bit
