Website Review and Suggestions

I was hoping to get some helpful criticism on the website that I manage. (http://www.totalpoolwarehouse.com) Any feedback you can give me I will treat as education. Notice there is no sitemap. How important is that to the search engines? I noticed that my number of indexed pages from google varies. Is that a result of not having a sitemap?

If I'm not mistaken a sitemap is big on google's list of must haves. It shouldn't be hard to build one.

Now my first criticism is the picture of the woman in the pool is too large. This creates a huge block of white blank space on the right. Then, the "best prices on the net" and the paragraph below it is too large as well. Looks a little amateurish.

I think its a pretty cool simple design but I agree that the picture of the woman in the background is a bit too big.

The design does not look professional, the picture of the woman is too large and the logo is too small the logo should be more prominent. I think the site would look better if you got a professional template.

Hey PoolProPete,

I will assume by your name that you are a "Pool Guy" and not a web designer in which case I give you kudos for jumping in and giving this website design stuff a whirl. There are plenty of folks out there that call themselves "web designers" that produce far uglier work than you have here.

When I need inspiration I often visit forums to see what other folks are doing. Sometimes I get some great ideas or new angles, but far too often people place the most tragic designs imaginable up for critical analysis and are then shocked when the flaming commences. Here is a good example of tragic web design that was posted today on another site: http://www.wyldearts.com/

My suggestion to you is stick to what you know, Pool Products and such. Get a professionally done template, have the SEO done correctly, and sell your stuff.
