not sure about templates but i think one you should integrate straight away is an xml feed so people can live bookmark your site and be updated with new feeds as and when new links/content are submitted.
i seein a lot of link directorys but thats not a feature im seeing with them so if you can manage that youll also have that one up on the other link dirs.
also a very usable feature that will keep people comin back for me as well.

How old is your directory? It has a good 4/10 PR at main page. However your categories are out of Google cache, yet You have great categories. I think an absolute free clear of reciprocal link request article submission service inside your categories would be perfect. What do you think? I'm pretty sure there are a lots of good plugins for phplinkdirectory.
