Personally, I think you have a great concept here.
I hope you have a good host, because your db is, eventually, going to be huge. I'd make sure you have a good back-up system in place. It would suck to get a lot of loyal visitors and then lose the whole database. Many people would not be happy.
As far as the presentation of your site goes, there are a few things you might want to consider.
I like the logo and the header.
I like the fact that you have limited the ads. Looks professional.
I like the colors and the overall layout.
I know that you are wanting to play on the title of the site, but having the word "Blast" at the beginning of all nav link names seems kind of cheesy to me. It's fine for certain cats.... BlastZine and BlastBlogs for example, but by using it too much, you lose the "uniqueness" of it.
Calling the finished artworks "Blasts" is confusing to a the average person. You, as the owner/designer know exactly what you mean by the term... but an artist thinks of his finished work as a piece of art, not a "Blast". Keep the
artist in mind. If you call a paint brush a "BristleBlaster", then nobody will know what the heck you're talking about.
There are some unnecessary categories and some redundant ones as well. In the top nav menu you have "Blast Categories". It is exactly the same as the "Art Categories" menu in the sidebar. I would keep the sidebar menu and lose the button in the top menu. There's a bit too much going on up there anyway.
"Blast Video"... are these created by members? If they are, then make that clear by either editing the name of the link or placing an explanation at the top of the linked page.
"Blasters" is ok. I think that one is understandable and it associates the contributors as artists within your site.
"BlastZine" good
"Blast Musc" "Blast Polls" and Blastertainment".... why why why? Focus on the art. Save that stuff for the blog. This has the potential to be a serious site, but these cats give it more of a highschool feel. I understand what you're trying to do, but I think you will get the same "community" feeling if you keep that stuff on the blog side of things. You have plenty of stuff going on already, why muddy the waters with stuff like that.
I like the rollover effect on the featured art work section. Nice job.
If you get rid of some of the top nav links, then I would move the "Tutorials" link from the sidebar up to the nav bar.... just PLEASE don't call them "Blastorials"
You should also place a link in the nav bar for your online drawing feature. It will be one of your most parts of the site, so make sure it's easy to get to. You should also offer tutorials on how to use it. Set up a separate cat for these drawing tutorials and title them so the user knows they are for your ap and not for some other program like PS.
I'd say you've got something going here. Keep it up!
