On my dial-up connection the header took about 45 seconds to load. The remainder of the page took about 2 minutes total time to load on my computer.
I think that you should shrink the height of the banner. It is a little bit too tall.
The green area with the word Login at the bottom part of the banner should be centered or moved lower on the page.
Your newsletter sign up form should be at or close to the top of the left hand column, not down at the bottom of the column. I would probably place it above the menu.
I would recommend making the images smaller because you have a little bit too much white space underneath the text that is across from the photo and it would speed up the loading of the home page.
Everything else looks great.
