Website Review and Suggestions

I need a review of my 1 year old site. Specifically, the image header (which I’m thinking about changing) and the site name itself. I'm thinking that my site name is hurting me in a SEO sense, because the site is about UFOs/Ufology but has the word 'saucer' in the title. Regarding the header image, I think a less abstract pic would be better. What do you think?

Appearance - Normally the colors would look bland, but since this site is about UFO's they make perfect sense with your scheme. Overall the site does look a little "cluttered", meaning there is a lot going on for my eyes to track when I first arrive at the page. I like the header image.
Functionality - re read the About us, mission statement, and services on the about us page. I found a few typos. Also it would be nice for you to make everything under services a link, only to your own site.
Overall & Content - Lot's of good content, which is great for your community base, and great for increasing your likelyhood to move up the page rank system in google.
Technical - As far as SEO's go, I do think it's helpful to include what you think people will be searching for in the domain of your site. I'm not 100% positive that it translates to more hits, but it definately couldnt hurt. I do know for a fact (or at least it has been widely documented) that outgoing links from your website to other peoples hurt your page rank. Incoming links from other peoples websites help your page rank. That would be a great place to start, contacting other websites with the same interest as your own and seeing if you can get them to link to your site.

i like the contents of the site really superb (well normally i like sci fi stuff) but seriously the design is were it falls down. You shouldn't go over board on the main page of the site. By the way does your site made in Word Press? or manual page updating? hehe

Thanks EJK for the detailed critique. Otherwise, based on all the other feed back I'm going to trim down the main page. But to answer emofree: I wrote my own custom content management system in PHP. Currenly the updates are done by uploading a meta file that triggers PHP to parse and push the content.
