Hi everyone. I am new to web design and have recently set up my own site. It's mostly HTML (which I find I really enjoy).

Please review and let me know what you think. But please keep your comments in a language I can understand. I am definitely on a learning curve with this.

After looking at some of the other sites out there for review, I know mine will look awfully basic, but it's getting there and it's a work in progress......

My web site is:

www.triviafunfacts.com

I'm also curious on your thoughts about something else. I really do like HTML but my husband keeps saying I should learn ASP and WordPress. What do you all think?

Thanks!

Everyone can build a website. If you wish to make good money, learn both ASP and HTML. You also need to learn usability, designing and seo.

big bit of advice for you. Go to a free css templates site and download a nice frame that is clean, modern and css compliant. USe that as the basis for your design. You will not only have a nicer end result but you will also learn much quicker how thins are structured and what happens if you alter something.

There is no point in learnin from scratch and producing a site that looks like a child did it (sorry to use a harsh analogy). You could help yourself a lot more by using a ready made frame and giving yourself a much better canvas on which to paint.

Try something like: http://www.freecsstemplates.org/css-templates/

Then you can download a theme, play around with different colours, graphics and structure and see how things work. You will learn a lot quicker and it will look comparatively better.

I do appreciate your input - no offense taken. That's what this is all about. I'm trying to learn. But does it really look like a kid did it?

I agree with thefandango, download a template and use it as a base. Even if you dont use the original design of the template it still gives you a foundation to work with. Sometimes it can be hard to come up with a layout. There is already a css in place and you can get some experience.

The site is very simple, very 1999 - go try out some design tutorials and you will be able to create something a little more up-to-date. Try for a logo with a transparent background it will look much better.

The design is not very good. I would suggest maybe to download a template. So the impression will be better. Also the text on subpages is hard to read (because background interference with the black text).

There is no relationship between WordPress and ASP.
WordPress runs on PHP.
ASP is basically dead technology anyway.

But you should learn to walk before you run.
Learn good design using XHTML and CSS first (standards compliant please!)
Then take it to the next level with server side scripting.

Hi - Your site looks fine but you have an error in your triangle quiz. The answer is 10 but you aren't showing it as a choice. You have 6 red, 3 white, and 1 large triangle that houses all of them. That's 10. I'm not trying to make enemies with my first post - just thought you might want it to be right. A lot of people get this wrong.

I don't think so. I think it definitely looks like someone new to HTML and web design did it. Hobbywise, its not bad. Its functional a good base, and you can learn more as you go. The content was interesting too, I read some of it. But from an industry standpoint, most of us here design websites for a living, either for clients or run a network of sites ourself. Its kind of like I could bake a decent cake. I am not great baker, but I'm sure if I found a good recipe online and with some tips from my mother I could bake a decent cake. For me that cake may be good for being my first (or even second, third, etc) cake, however my cake would still not compare with the custom cake designer that creates cakes from 9-5 every day.

Not exactly.
Web design was much better than that back in those days.

It looks exactly like what it is:
the first website somebody every made.

You've still got a long way to go but we all have
to start somewhere.

Actually, that particular puzzle isn't my creation. It is an ad, which I am not supposed to click on since I make money whenever someone else clicks on the ads throughout the site. That is interesting that that would be wrong though......

I don't want to open a can of worms, but do you mind if I ask how that works, professionally? With my trivia site I got the domain, I do the set-up through Coffee Cup, which is free, and then I push it out to the Internet with FileZilla, also free. I used to work at the Highway Patrol and would do changes and updates to their site (but obviously the design was already there). They had a place where you made the changes or updates, you could check them, then you pushed them out. If you develop a site for a business, how does that work? You know, I already have an MBA, but I think I'm going to have to go back and take some classes in web design, because this is really fascinating and it is just TOO cool when you write some code and see it come to life right in front of you!

Cute concept. (I had no idea Coca-Cola was originally green.) Your site just needs a make-over to look more inviting but you have nice content.
