i do one of two things:
1) say it my opinion as a designer it's best to do this rather than that and explain why and show them the difference (e.g.a pic without borders on a page compared with one with) but if they persist and it's only a matter of opinion (a bit like in the case of your picture borders) then i would go with what they wanted if i couldn't change their mind
2) explain why one design aspect is better than another (theirs) and back it up with either similar examples of good practice, research (e.g. eye tracking reports done by the likes of Jakob Nielsen) and/or review by my peers/friends and offer their opinions in support of my arguement.
3) the third of the two things - in respsonse to simply outlandish requests merely laugh out loud and say "nah, that it would look crap!" this is only recommended if you have the sort of relationship with that particular client that will take rejection of their ideas.
sometimes it's better to blunt
