We're in the process of developing a new animal listing plugin for WordPress and it was time for a massive update on this site. I like this layout, but I'm a little unsure if it's too much going on at one time. Colors are not up for negotiation, I've had the same color scheme for years and it is unique to my facility (when it comes to this market, anyway).
Some things I'm interested in knowing...
Readability - Do you think the light text on the textured dark background is difficult to read? Are the layer styles distracting to the eye in the CTA and sidebar headers?
Layout - Too much space? Too busy? More photography?
Target - Looking at either of the samples pages, can you tell, without a doubt, what the "product" is?
Home Pg
Where the hognose is will be a randomized image of different species we work with. Menu will be drop downs.

Hi again
Love the colours. Very nice. The outlined image behind the logo ["triple"] is a nice touch.
Can't really fault it actually - I think the soft pink and the brown go well. It doesn't look too rough or too soft - just bang in the middle!
edit: maybe just one thing would be if the snake looked like it was resting on the brown strip/box.. either that or add some depth to the background where the snake is so it doesn't look too super-imposed. Other than that, it looks real nice.

ditto that...looks good. Impressive work. Sorry I don't have much feedback, but I honestly can't find anything wrong at the moment. lol

I really like it. Very nice choice of colors that one wouldn't really imagine together, but it works quite well. The funny thing for me is that when I see the domain name, i immediately see SEXotic.

Yeah, I know. Everyone says that. They always think it's a dirty site.

It looks great. As far as constructive criticism goes, I'd add just a few little details. 1px light and dark lines between your background transitions will make it pop a bit more. Also, your footer needs some more padding on the top and bottom. In Chrome, your dropdown menu needs a little work with aligning the third level of menus. Finally, I think you might need to fill out your homepage a bit more. The big area beneath the text is a little too big of a gap. Hope that helps.

Why is Sex refered to as "dirty"??
It is as natural as breathing is (just not as regular )

O, you got me wrong there. By "dirty" I meant people see the domain and think porn.

I read and reread this for a time before I went and looked to figure out what you meant by third level. The third tier of the drop downs was supposed to be off the menu (in fact, that page that appears isn't even supposed to be live yet!), so I went and removed it. I'm aware of the problem with the drop, posted here for some help a couple days ago about it.

Very cool-
except I think theres too much empty space.
You could probably fit the entire page above the fold, especially the actually site content (pics, recent posts, etc)
The row with "captive born..." and the snake should be shorter in height and either move the contents of row 3 (the same pics, recent, etc) directly below the the paragraph or shrink the sidebar.
hmmm after clicking Articles, I guess ya did shrink the "captive" part and Im thinking you just needed to find a way to include the snake? Perhaps then moving the snake down below the paragraph and shrinking the row.
Hope that doesnt sound too confusing - probably should checked out the whole site first before critiquing the front page.
But I do love the fact you keep the same colors as in the design/personal site yet all 3 look different!

Nope, no plans to include any of the snakes (it's rotating javascript, so a different one appears every page load) on the sub pages. Bringing attention that you work only with captive bred animals is also very important in the industry. No plans to move the footer content either. That's sort of the purpose with a layout like this.
My intent with the large graphics on the home page is to immediately catch attention. I'm not too worried about the introductory paragraph being above the fold. Once I get around to photographing stock it might be bumped down anyway when I place in additional graphics to bring attention to that.
I think I need to work with the h tags a bit more. I don't think enough distinction between the different articles is currently being made (if that makes sense).
What are the thoughts on the blog? Too much, too little?

Hmmm- I've seen the same snake on every load. IMO a snake is gonna capture attention. Even a tad smaller, I would still be drawn to it.
The blog is much better- I guess thats what I was trying to say. Theres content across the page. The "blog captive" part at that size is still significant enough to make your point. You have the blog entries taking up the empty space.
A guess the better suggestion wouldve been to simply place something in that space below the paragraph. That huge empty space was the turnoff. Dont get me wrong, though, the background looks sharp. Just would prefer something else in there content-wise. Another reptile picture would be cool.

Disregard the content. I am not asking about quality or size of content; my concern is the overall design.
