Website Review Guidelines
Asking for a review
When asking for a review, please keep in mind the following:
1. Be specific with the feedback you want and need. - Let us know what you are trying to achieve with the website.
- Do you want comments on a specific section, or overall comments? What problems are you currently experiencing?
- This forum is for reviewing your website, not the business concept behind it.
- This is not an opportunity to promote your own website or services.
- If the site requires users to log in, then provide demo log in details. Reviewers shouldn't have to register to review your site.
- Reviewers will be as kind or as harsh as they see fit. Remember, you asked for it, and you are going to get it.
2. Nothing personal. People will always find something they don't like, or point out something wrong when asked to review a website. Comments are not directed upon your ability, or lack thereof, to design or develop websites or web pages. Reviews are meant to be constructive, informative, and helpful when possible. It makes sense that reviewers will focus on your site's shortcomings.Remember, none of the comments are personal.
3. Tell us your experience If this is your first time to design a website or if you are new to HTML, PHP, CSS, etc., then say so. Reviewers will be a little more easy and helpful, leading you through the process of fixing the issues and making changes. If you wish to have a very critical review of your site, say so. Specify if the development work on site has been fully completed or not. The reviewers will "let you have it," good or bad, all in an attempt to help you improve your site.
4. Say Thank You Be sure and take a few minutes of your time to show your appreciation and say thanks.
5. Participate and review other websites From the information and lessons you gained from your own review, start paying attention to other sites and how they work. You can show your appreciation to the Tycoon Talk community by reviewing other people's websites.
Constructing the review:
When constructing a review, please keep in mind the following:
1. Comply with the request. If the user requesting the review has asked reviewers to review a particular aspect of their site, then refrain from making comments on other aspect of their site. 2. Offer as much constructive comments as possible. Simply posting "Nice Site", or similar, won't qualify. Short, generic posts are useless to the site author and will be deleted.
3. Provide recommendations for improvement. It is alright to criticize, but try to give constructive criticism. For example, don't just say that "i don't like your site's design" provide reasons why you don't like the site design, what can be done to improve the site design in your opinion.
4. Reviews will be practical, helpful, and should encourage good web practices. When referencing a specific problem or resource, be as specific as possible and use links to the problem or resource. Support your opinions using specific examples.
5. For technical reviews, give as much information about your system as possible. Provide the answer to the these questions in your post :
- Which operating system you're using?
- Which browser you are using?
- What is your screen resolution?
- Is your browser window fully maximized?
- Did you change any default settings which can affect site layout?
Include any input which you used uncover the any issue.
Providing a screen shot will be quite helpful as well.
6. You don't have to be an experienced web developer or web designer to review a site. Provide a review from an end user's perspective. Here's a list of some of the questions you can try asking yourself when reviewing a website:
- Is it clear what the site does when you visit the site's homepage or do you have to search around to find out what the site is actually for?
- Is the site navigation logical? can you easily move around or do you feel lost?
- Are colors appropriate for the target audience?
- Is the site loading slowly compared to other site?
Special Note: There is a lot of traffic in this forum. Be sure to look on the following pages for new threads that have not had reviews! There is a View Replyless Requests link at the top of the threads for your convenience.
[Shey 12.28.2011] This update is an attempt to improve the length and the quality of the feedback.
Disclaimer: All reviews, critics, comments and posts are the responsibility of the reviewer and not of Tycoon Talk nor its representatives.
