Would appreciate any reviews, comments, criticisms, bugs, etc. for:

onesheetdesign.com

Since this was created on a Mac, I'm especially interested in any browser issues on the PC side.

A few notes:

- this is a rushed temporary/uncompleted design (there are more thumbnails/designs to be added, for example).

- since this site uses several shades of gray, and monitor gammas vary so wildly, the site may look too dark or too light. This will likely have to be changed/fixed. Does the site look too dark or light in your browser?

- there are many nasty tables, slices, spacers and other non-validating aspects to the HTML. ;)

Appreciate any feedback/help.

I think your site doesn't immediately tell visitors what it is that you do. I would guess that most people would just leave before giving you a chance to show your stuff! It all seems really dark. It also seems like your main page is just thumbnails and a few links. It really has no content on the main page.

Appreciate the feedback so far.

And to answer your question, it's a movie poster designer's portfolio. (The name of the site is onesheetdesign.com, the title bar says "movie poster design", each poster has a little background text/content that went into designing each poster, etc.) Sorry if that wasn't more clear -- that problem can be addressed in a revision. ;)

jca,

You need a home page telling me what onsheetdesign.com is. Showing up at the site and being presented with a grid of thumbnails to click left me wondering where I was and what you were trying to tell me. I moved around a bit and eventually figured it out. Your site reminds me a bit of a body without a head -- that home page is your touchstone to introduce your visitors to your work.

I think your graphic design skills are remarkable, but your site left me with the feeling that if you can design these intricate posters, why not some color on your site? I personally like gray designs; but yours is an artistic profession and so the design doesn't quite mesh with your product.

The work you have done is remarkable. Are those actual movie posters that you designed for the studios? Were they printed and actually displayed in movie theaters?

I agree with previous comments that the site needs a intro page describing what the site is actually about, first thing that came to mind when i went to that site was that it was a film review site.

*edited due to a rethink after another look at the site.

Appreciate the comments/feedback. I'll try to address the front page and background info of the site in the next revision.

Just curious, is there anyone here who hasn't heard of the term one-sheet before?

Thanks for the kind words. Those are all "actual poster" concepts I designed, some of which went to "finish" as the final artwork. (They're labeled if they were used as the final key art.) As you might guess, the best work is usually the designs that never make it out of the "first round" of the process. ;)

I've never heard the term before, although, I am not exactly involved in professional print design. Could you define it for us in the context of what you do?

One-sheet is just an industry term for the standard 27"x41" movie poster.

A more specific definition:

"One Sheet -- a 27"x41" poster, usually printed on paper stock. Modern posters are rolled, while older film posters are folded. The one-sheet is the "standard" film advertising poster size in the U.S. It is now virtually the only size printed. Recent years have seen variations of an inch or more in the dimensions of a one-sheet. This is especially true of some border less ("full-bleed") posters, which may be 26"x40" or smaller. "

Well the domain name is deffinately a good pick then.

Those are cool posters. Make me want to go out and rent a copy of Blow Dry, not really but the site is pretty cool. Contrary to what others may think of this, I would think that people would asociate movies with a dark background, as movie theatres are dark.

My first thought is larger thumbnails. Not huge, but big enough to see what they are without having to mouse over them. While the mouse-overs require interaction, hence ocupy the visitor, a movie producer might be annoyed by this.

I have heard of most of those movies, except "Blow Dry". So a potential customer might have a look at the "Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone" design and maybe want to hire a guy just based on previous work. But when you can't see the thumbnail it defeats having a thumbnail. I like the the mouseover's on the thumbnails though.

If you made the first page in the same format as the pages that the thumbnails link to you could explain what you do in the text box to the right and to the left and it would keep your page consistant as well. I don't mind the contrast. Very cool site!!

The site is a bit dark, and the tones used for the layout are too similar. Were you trying to tone it down so the rollover images in color would pop out? If so, you went too far with it.

The thumbnails are too small, I want to be able to at least read the title of the movie off of them.

jca - i really liked the design work on the site but i think its slightly let down by the lack of color!! Even a change in color of the logo may bring the site out a bit and make it easier on the eye or a change in background.

the 3-d effect of the main body looks very good - but you need to follow the effect through to the drop-shadow (otherwise i just looks a bit like a stray block of black).

in the slideshow section, the text that appears on rollover of the image is too small to read.

all in all its looking great - love the sheet designs Good Luck with the site
