Oh.. but it IS deprecated when you teach things like <font> and <center>.
And just for the record, I cut my HTML teeth on 2.0, might have even been 1.1, it's been so long I don't recall
Just teaching what you learned back then isn't good enough. Better to teach CURRENT HTML and standards, then the noobs wouldn't have to UNlearn bad habits when they want to code a site for 2006 and not 1996 !
If you, as the 'teacher' have not progressed beyond what you learned in the past, then you are not a good teacher.
Before you flame me for that one, I have been in IT for about 25 years and spent a LOT of time teaching software. I never taught OLD software to students, we always taught current technology. Same principle goes for HTML  .
