Thanks. To explain the height:
If the banner is say, 90px tall, it will feel like an advertisement banner (turn adblock off if you have it on). A banner should be fairly tall to give it a trusty feel. Still, my banner is a bit taller than your typical trusty banner. That's intentional because it is stuck to the roof and there's no space above it. I made up for that space in height. This is not all that uncommon to have a very tall upper portion when there's no space between that and the top of the client (browser) screen. Part of it is that the banner is 700px wide and that gives it a taller projection.
The buttons are supposed to be large and provide a good clickable area. They also need to be tall to match the banner.
I really don't find the nav links hard to read either. They are 2 entirely separate colors and easy to distinguish from one another. I'll still probably change it up a bit sicne you mentioned it. Actually, silktide advises against using red and green because of a common color blindness problem with them - or maybe that's just the 2 in combo with eachother...
