I like the overall feel, but I think you could do more with layout choices and content flow.
Firstly, you have a header. That is fine, great and recommended. Although I don't really bother with a header on my site (well, I don't make it the attraction) it is advisable for your content type. It's also funny, which I really like.
In the header, the grey writing "The World According To" looks more like "The World Accordins To". This is either a typo or nasty font.
The orange bar underneath the main navigation would best be served for showing sub navigation, instead of having an additional navigation bar on the left. In my eyes, there should only be one area of site navigation (if any at all). Keep links that take you through sections of the site in one area, that way users can remember how to get places.
Although it is christmas time, I think the asterisks between the words in the main navigation are a little over-board and make it quite harder to interpret.
Layout as I first stated, the layout is yet to be desired. Your site is skinny. Therefore, three columns is not going to work. No matter how skinny you try to make them. Make your content start on the immediate left and take up at least 70% (relative) space. Then use the rest to show off your sidebar. Make sure that emphasis is always on your content, and not on the extras of your site. Currently, I am more interested in the sidebars - why? Because they are colourful, co-ordinated and have HEADINGS. You've left out headings from your main content. If anything, this is the most important part. H1, h2, h3, etc were made for a reason. Remember, your eyes go naturally from left to right, therefore you should want your visitors to read your content instead of just using your site.
Language changer - personally, I would shove this in with the sub navigation, or above the header. It's a piece of usability, not feature. Therefore should be seperate from such.
Remove the extra navigation from the other sidebar, refer to the point I made earlier for clarity.
Combine the orange and green sidebars, and be careful. Put the sections of each in order of importance. Users online isn't as important as a poll, because polls can provide very useful quantitative/qualitative information on your site and it's current performance.
Other than that, I really like it. I think over time you'll do really well with the site.
Hopefully, the points I have made will help your website become more user friendly.
P.S. Take a look at what your site looks at without styles and jigg it about a little so that the content comes after the header/nav and before the sidebar.
