I used to and a lot of the times still do make the same exact mistakes you're making. And to fix it you only need th change three major things then you'll pretty much be there.
First off is that you're only using 700 something pixel width. Think about making the width 100%. The width will be different for different monitors and it would look more appealing if it were stretched out all the way.
Secondly, You should barely ever (unless you're using extremely light colors.. Even then you might not want to) Use a gradient for ever navigation link. I did that once, changed it and after that my reviews were 2 times better.
Last and definitely most important. Think about your colors. You can't just jump into it and say I'm going to use burgundy with gray. You need to spend a good few ours with a color wheel to see what colors work well with each other, and then change the shades from there on out until it looks pleasing to the viewer, and easy on the eyes. Look at other sites, and don't necessarily copy their design but see what looks good and apply that to designs later on.
As for content there isn't anything wrong. You have a very good amount of content and after you get a good website to pull a viewer in the first time they see your site your content will keep them coming back.
See www.miniclip.com for a good example of what you're doing.
