You missed the point completely.
It wouldn't take that much longer, because most directories don't provide that much of a quality backlink. They usually provide a backlink, but the traffic that results from it is next to nil and the search engine benefit is likely about the same.
A unique design doesn't solve this problem, either. It's a layout. It looks pretty. Big deal. All the other major problems with directory sites still exist: lack of originality, similar content, no reason to return as a visitor, etc. As McBone pointed out, it's a saturated marketplace because everyone thinks they can get in easily and make a quick buck. They're half right.
It is nothing more than a skin. So...I ask you directly...how are you going to make your directory unique and make visitors want to come back to it? (Keeping in mind that the skin isn't the answer.)
