I've been building web sites for 10+ years In the 'old days' keywords actually were king for search engines (pre-google). The fact is these days keywords are not what gets you top rankings, it's more attributable to incoming links and even Google will tell you that those are paramount to good rankings. The more incoming links you have, and RELEVANT links, the more popular your site gets 'rated' and the higher you should rank.
Good, ORIGINAL content is also a big factor. I don't waste a lot of time fretting about keywords on my sites. Sure, I use some very pointed ones, but I don't kill myself researching what words to use.
Also important, good titles, and clean, semantic markup - that means using REAL headings (h1-h6), paragraphs, etc.
