@twiggy: thanks for your feedback. I spend some time on the Ruby on Rails mailing list, where there are many people who develop their own sites in their spare and who don't have the budget to hire anyone for a usability test. Furthermore, it's evident that most sites don't spend *any* time on usability testing, and could benefit from quick, free feedback. Getting them to think so is another story, however.
@travelagent - could you please explain how your perceived lack of understanding on my part between "developers" and "webmasters" is related to your comment that my site makes no sense whatsoever?
Before commenting further on the viability of the site's purpose, please take a look at http://www.useit.com/alertbox/fast-methods.html . There, Jakob Nielsen explains how Fast, Cheap usability testing is Good. The same message can be found in Steve Krug's book Don't Make Me Think.
In any case, the developer (among the people I associate, the term "webmaster" is hardly used anymore, but the actual words used aren't as important as their referents, right?) friends I've shown this to think it's a great idea, and I do as well. But really it will take time to find if this site is useful or if it makes no sense whatsoever. I appreciate the feedback so far, and would greatly appreciate any further feedback on other aspects of the site. For example:
* Is the purpose of the site clear from the home page?
* Is it clear how the site works?
Thanks!
