Hello everyone - I'm a new user (excuse my 3 rapid posts to get this message up - I do intend to be a regular contributor ).

I'd really appreciate some feedback on my websites.

Firstly I have www.digital-reefs.com

With this site, I would particualrly like to check if the 'directory' section (direct link: www.digital-reefs.com/directory.htm) is working properly. There should be about 20 banners down the left hand side of the page. I'd welcome any comments about the gebneral design too - I dabbled with DreamWeaver when creating it but found that to much to take, so used Frontpage instead (I suspect people may not rate FP that highly...). Any comments welcome!

Second site is a new one that I am working on: www.centrepointvr.co.uk

With this one, I'd love to get an idea of how many people can view the VR image in the portfolio gallery (www.digital-reefs.com/portfolio.htm - yes, I have hosted this on the same space as my first site). Clicking on the image should load a QuickTime VR movie.

Thats it really!

come on folks... 7 views and no comments?

I'd be interested to know even if the site looks OK and works properly!

I liked the look of your home page but felt that the fluttering flags spoilt the look that you have created.
You state that your web site is best viewed at 1024 x 768 or 1280 x 1024. This is fine for me, I view at 1024 x 768 but in general is a bad idea because you are excluding a large proportion of your visitors.
Apart from the two points above I must congratulate you for what you jhave achieved.
I had a look at your QuickTime movie and had no problems viewing it. A very slick piece of work.
I hope this helps to get your reviews started.

at last - a comment!

Many thanks Aldor.

With regard to the resolution, should I be optimising the site for another resolution? - It was very complicated to set-up, but I think it should fit most resolutions by autostretching.

Points taken about the flags and I am glad the VR worked - it seems very temperamental - I am considering creating a Java version but still researching this.

Kind regards

John

Hi

I liked the images once I got to them, but for me the site is very dark and I found that some pages such as the about us page took a long time to load. Over all I liked the site, however I would work a little bit more on the Page Titles, meta Tags and keywords. also the pages have good images but not much text.

Regards

OK. Here comes my review.
Ten years ago your design and layout would have been just OK. Nowadays though, the whole look of it is too outdated and that goes for both of your sites.

Your digital reefs content has potential because people like looking at marine life (at least I do). It is colorful and calming. It has the same effect as the outer space. You also have a lot of textual content. Bring in more images, maybe videos, divide texts and loose that horrible font you are using for links. There is just too much to improve. You need a consistent design. When people click a button, they expect something to happen. If you confuse them with a completly different layout, they loose interest and go "play" elswhere.

What you really should do is to sit down, rethink the whole layout and don't put everything you like in one page. Also make a better use of imaging software like Photoshop or other. The background is nice, the animated flags (lol) and images also. It is the way you've used them that spoils it, which is a shame really because the content is very likable. But the flags, although nice, you wont find in a modern and professional looking website.

Do not try and patch it up. Leave it and create a completely new site. Then replace it.

I see above that BButton felt your pages loaded too slowly. Well I had a look on a dial up connection and thought how quickly the about page loaded.
As to your comment about which resolution to design for I would suggest that you try and view your site at other resolutions (perhaps use a friend ) and make a descision then.
I really cannot agree with what frofi posted but it is your site, and in the end you must do as you think best.
One thing you learn here is that you can't please all the people all the time.

thanks for the comments

Aldor - yes, I have viewed the site on various different resolutions and it seems fine on most. The autostretch appears to keep everything in relatively the right position.

It's interesting to note the comments about loading speeds. I'd have thought it would be quite quick to load as none of the graphical elements are that big IIRC. However, I have had a couple of users having problems with my banner page (directory section). There should be about 25 banners in this section but as said some users have reported only 2 or 3 showing.... I am trying to resolve this problem and would love to know if people can view it or not (this isn't a ploy to generate more traffic to the page btw). I wonder if it may be a browser compatibility issue?

Frofi - thanks for you comments. I do agree with you actually! - do you think Frontpage is capable (given creative use) of authoring modern professional looking pages? if not, any suggestions on the best software to use? (bear in mind I have no formal training). I do know how to use photoshop fairly well as I hope is demonstrated with my photographic work on the sites. I suspect I need to put a bit more time into learning the graphics side though... point taken about layout. Looks like the flags will be flying away shortly!

I've never used Frontpage, so I can't comment on that. Since you are a beginner, you really should be using some WYSIWYG designing software like Dreamwaver. But if you are on a tight budget, I suggest you browse the internet for a free web-design soft. Notepad++ isn't bad, but you'll have to keep checking your results in your browser as soon as you make a change, otherwise you may end up spending hours looking for errors. It is not a WYSIWYG editor. Of course, there are some free WYSIWYG programs out there as well.

By the way, I have no formal training either.
Good luck!
