Hey guys. I had intended just joining to get some tips for improving the appearance of my website but after looking around, I will probably stay a while.

I have had my website for about 3 years. It has gone through many changes over the coarse of it's existance. I originally was using tables to lay out the site but I heard that CSS was the wave of the future so I switched to that a couple of months ago. The site design was done by me but I am getting a little bored with it now. I'd like to visually enhance it, as I think it's kind of blahhhh right now. I am hoping that I could get some ideas how to improve the appearance and/or content of the site. It's located at http://www.dueysdrawings.com/ if you'd like to have a look.

Glad you dropped by and glad to see you've taken the CSS plunge -- lots easier to control your site with less coding!

I don't see why you think your site is blahhh -- I like it myself; in fact I see alot of sites these days set up this way.

Hey - I think the site looks great! However... I think the links at the bottom would look better in perhaps a drop down menu placed near the top of the page

Travelagent, what exactly are those codes? I see them in my analytics software when I am checking stats every once in a while. It's just standards compliance right? Are those errors hurting anything? Also, how do I know EXACTLY how to fix each error?

t4tom4, thanks for looking. I know the bottom of each page looks a little crappy. I added those links down at the bottom mainly for SEO purposes. So that spiders could find the other pages on my site and list them too. I know that a sitemap will do the same thing, and I also have one of those.

Every error is the same issue pretty much. You don't have / before the closing >
You should add / to the following things:
Break tags: <br />
Images Tags <img src=""/>
Meta tags in your header <meta blah blah blah />

Then you are using alt="description of link" in your links? It should be alt="" for images and title="" for links. I figure you're linking images have that messed up but i'm just guessing without looking.

As for how it will affect your SEO? Well I'm no expert but I have seen some very poorly coded sites rank pretty high. That doesn't mean they haven't or won't in the future get penalized for it. If you don't start doing it now it may be next to impossible to fix every post on your site to comply.

Your site is pretty plain but the layout is nice and I think it's great for what you are using it for. It will give more focus on your pencil drawings. Which are pretty **** good.

Trulyunusualdot, thank you for all of that. I will get to work fixing those errors, thanks for explaining what was wrong.

I am ranked fairly well on SE's right now. I know my coding is a little on the rough side. SE's penalize sites that aren't coded properly? I did not know that, even more reason to fix my code now.

Does anyone have suggestions as to how I could make my site design a little more exciting?

No problem. Glad I could help. What are you using for your portal/cms? Looks like wordpress. I really think your site is fine. It's not too flashy and like I said in your case you want the focus shifted to the content. I didn't mean your site was bad I was just refering to the colors and they work. Don't fix something that's not broken. JMHO

If you really want to change things I would draw something, scan it and use it in your site design. You have some nice talent and it could be a good way to showcase it. Otherwise leave it the way it is.

Looks like trulyunusualdot did a good job explaining those to you -- fixing them is a sort of assurance your site will display properly in almost every browser available.

Fabulous drawings ! I like the site. I'm not crazy about the scrolling iframe idea, but that's me.

You set your DOCTYPE as XHTML Strict, which is good, but your code doesn't comply. That is the primary reason for all those errors Travelagent posted.

In XHTML, EVERY tag MUST be closed, including meta tags.

A few other things you need to do:
- remove the inline styles and put them in an external CSS file. XHTML Strict should be complete separation of content and presentation.
- remove all those <br>'s and put your text in proper <p></p> tags. Use CSS to space out the paragraphs to suit your needs.
- Same goes for the width declarations on your <hr> - control that with CSS.
- You've got several "target="xxx" in your links. The target attribute is not allowed in XHTML Strict, it is deprecated, and will cause a validation error. You should not be opening new windows anyway.
- ALL images should have width and height defined in the <img> tag.

I'm not convinced that the grey text on black background is a great idea.
Also the main headings on your home page don't line up in IE7. I have checked in Firefox and no problem.
The drawings you showcase are first class, well done.

Not necesarily! Only the alt attribute is mandatory. The code validates without width and height.

Yes, but the width and height attributes will set a placeholder while the image loads. Without it, a slow loading image could cause page content to "jump," when the image finally does load.

As for the site, I like it. It's easy to read from and navigate, and it looks good. The only thing that bugged me was that my cursor became a "+," on links, and even that, it doesn't matter in the slightest. Nice work.
