Hi Guys,

I'm a web designer and developer and just finished spending the last few weeks on a personal project. I've built an ajax(ish) photo uploader and host with a few neat features. I hope that some of you in the forum might be able to get some use from it and I'd love feedback as well since it's still a very early release!

Thanks!!

All I see is an upload form and a link to a forum. Am I missing something?

No that's all there is... unless it is coming up unstyled. There should be a header logo and input fields with a set of three tabs for File, URL, and History. It should look pretty.

Okay, I think I understand. It looks like you added a signature here, and that jogged my imagination, which seems underactive I guess. You're providing a service where you host images for people who don't have a web site of their own, to be able to post them in forums or blogs...? This wasn't clear from your page; you might want to take your signature text and put it on the page somewhere.

You should have a look at pbase.com, photo.net, and www.photosig.com, which could be your main competition. The first was free for a while, but I think they have enough users they were forced to upgrade their hosting, and have a small charge. The next two aren't really meant for what your site is about, although many people upload images to these two sites and then link to them from there, instead of having their own hosting and bandwidth.

You're going to have to answer some tough questions to make your web site successful, and since this is the review and suggestions forum, let me suggest putting up a terms of service page on your site. If you check either of the links in my sig you'll see why this stuff jumps to mind and how I compare to your target market; ie how much weight to give these questions.

What happens to an image after someone uploads it? There's no text about this - do users relinquish their copyright to the image by uploading it? Because I couldn't find an answer to this ( and also because I have my own hosting ) I left without uploading anything. How else will the images be used? How do mine fit in with the rest of what's there? I think that's one reason pbase became so popular; it's browsable.

You might want to put up a few links pages, too. One listing photography forums where a person could take advantage of your service. That would obviously be the most beneficial, for you and for your guests, but you might point them to some good articles on photography as well, since you know your people will be interested in the subject.

Hi ForrestCroce,

This is by far the most detailed response I've gotten on the site so far

That said, I guess I've missed the mark in describing my service. I've been so inundated with "uploaders" that I suppose I've become numb to the idea of having to introduce a new user the premise of the site. Essentially, the most prominent use case that this site is designed for is that a forum contributor wants to include an image in their post; the majority of online forums (like this one) do not allow you to upload images to your reply, so users are often forced to use a third-party site to host their files. This is where imageshack.us, supload.com, and a whole slew of other services are positioned. Not exactly a great place to be due to the competition, but from a user experience perspective these sites are seriously lacking in their execution. Thus, my target market has been validated (by the existence of these sites) but not properly monetized (where I come in).

I have thought about a TOS but for most users this is irrelevant. I'd like to include that at some point but the majority of the images submitted appear to have been released in to the public domain.

pbase.com appears to be a very cool site; however I suspect that its userbase is as large as it is because it has been around for a long time. It also appears to cater to a less-tech savy market (given the design of the site and the existence of numerous other sites offering the same services for free, like deviantart.com).

Thanks for the response!
