Since MySpace.com was sold for millions of dollars, I think the basic concept is proven.
But because of MySpace, you can't just go out and do the same thing. Why would we use your service over MySpace? They have more people, more resources, etc. What benefit is there to your service that MySpace doesn't provide.
That's where Giorgos's tip about specialization comes in. If your site is MySpace for musicians or MySpace for artists, or MySpace for football fans, or MySpace for whatever, it stands a better chance of succeeding than just being a MySpace clone.
So my answer is - yes it will work, but only if you make your site built on but significantly different from the MySpace model.
{I can safely say that I have never written the word MySpace that many times in a single post before! I hope I don't ever have to do it again!}
