Hi all,
This isn't a review request really, though actually, any input on page in my sig is most welcome. It needs help.
It seems I'm always giving pretty much the same advice in every review, so, for what it's worth, here's my best shot, all in one place.
----------------------------
1) Tell us what your site is about, in a sentence or two,
right at the top of home page, where we can't miss it.
2) Consider doing the same on each page. A short summary
of each article, at the beginning of the article. Tell
us what we're about to read (or we may not bother).
3) Mailing lists are important. Consider thinking of
your site as the tool you're using to build your list.
4) Put a subscription form on every page of your site.
Be there ready at that moment we reach the peak of our
interest.
5) Give us a great reason to join your list, something
tangible and truly useful that we get immediately upon
confirming our subscription.
6) If you're a new webmaster (or a veteran) don't spend lots
of time worrying about the details of your aesthetic design.
Face the fact that your readers don't care about your art
skills, or your ego. They just don't care. They don't.
Maybe the single biggest mistake newcomers (and maybe
veterans too?) make is investing too much time in design,
and not enough in promotion.
7) But, strive to keep your design as simple, clean and
uncluttered as you can. White space is your friend, and
the reader's friend too.
8) Do worry about whether your navigation is understandable
at a glance, and always nearby.
9) None of the above matters unless your content is truly
useful in some way. Is it?
10) Forget about your site altogether. Disconnect your
computer from the Net. Write the 50 best articles you
ever wrote in your whole life. Let them sit, and then
rewrite them. Again. Get a friend to help you edit.
Write the book first, then publish.
11) Forget about you, and your needs. Sorry, but, um,
nobody cares. Find out what your readers want and need,
and give it to them. Keep your focus on them. Become
their servant.
12) Personalize your site. Don't hide behind the pages.
Your "About Us" page should make us laugh, and want to
call you on the phone.
13) Incoming links. Links, links, links and more links.
Links until you want to scream. Then more links. Make
building your links a part of your daily routine, which
lasts for the entire history of your site.
14) Love what you do. Or you probably won't make it.
Yikes, I gotta go! There's too much of this I haven't
done myself!
Hope this is helpful. Best of luck!
