We adopted a "new way" to our image gallery on our online portfolio: http://www.cupantileandpaint.com/gallery.html

Instead of clicking on image to enlarge.
We direct user to more information with other pictures in same genre.

Goal is to give customer more information, and provide our telephone number to gain a potential client.

Just seeing how people would view this.

It seems like an ok idea but I think you should re-size the image at the top of the screen, as it makes it hard to figure out what page you are on exactly.

Also i cant find any way to get back to the gallery once an image has been clicked.

Just hit the "Back" button.

Or there is a "portfolio" link in the div above main content.
And there is a div to the left that anchors "View our portfolio".

Hitting the "back" button shouldn't be part of the navigation, even if there is a link. This method, to me seems confusing and might be a bit frustrating considering the fact that its disregarding a standard/pattern people are used to, of clicking on an image and seeing it enlarged. It reminds me of links that don't go where they say they will, but instead redirect you to advertising

Your idea is good but obviously if the user clicks to enlarge the image, they want to see a bigger picture of the image.

Combine an enlargement of the picture and your idea and you will see great success.
